With Winter Quarter in full swing, students can often be found dashing madly about the halls, with part-time jobs, classes, and other events and interests occupying much of their time.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's all work. Daybreak Academy tries to offer its students an abundance of leisure time to relax and unwind. With Valentine's Day fast approaching, romance is in the air as news of the Feast of St. Valentine and the Valentine's Ball begin to spread around campus. Already, talks of fashion and finding the right date are buzzing among the student body. With the winter months winding down, the oppressive chill of Winter is starting to loosen its grip, but there's still plenty of snow left for those who want to take one last run at Daybreak's slopes. As midterms approach, the school is as vibrant and busy as ever.

A. SECOND-HAND MARKET

Daybreak Academy has existed for several centuries. Throughout all that time, its ethos has been that of honing the abilities of deserving students, no matter what their birthright or social standing. Even still, the lavish galas befitting the riches of the school continued to have an impact, as poorer students unable to acquire proper attire were often locked out. To remedy this, Daybreak Academy began a tradition that it has upheld ever since - the Second-Hand Market. Hosted in an ever-expanding number of classrooms, the Second-Hand Market brings out all of the clothing, weapons, and other items that have been acquired, resold, or otherwise donated to the academy throughout its lifespan.

Here, any students and faculty can acquire any number of items, such as formal wear, weaponry, and other items for a fraction of the price. Most items are in decent condition, although there are some old items in disrepair that are even cheaper. They can come from just about anywhere in the world and just about any era, and you are able to exchange equivalent items, weapons and armor in both magical and mundane varieties, and formal clothing. Especially among richer students, the tradition is to donate any new clothing or items you commission for social events once the event is complete, to keep the stock current and available for the students who might need it.

With the upcoming ball, the Second-Hand Market is once again open for the first half of February. Staffed completely by students, it is frequently bustling with customers, many of whom not only buy outfits or weapons for the upcoming dance, but also spares they can use for their own projects.

B. LAST CHANCE ON THE SLOPES

With the Winter season winding down, the Arctic Slopes are entering their final months of operation for the season. For those hoping to get some skiing or snowboarding in, now will be the last chance for quite some time. As such, the lodge is full of students trying to take advantage of the last chance on the slopes. Winter has lingered this year, and the snow pack is still dense, making it perfect for one last hurrah. With the rush of students and faculty alike, the lodge is stocked with warm meals and hot chocolate to fill people's bellies after a long day on the slopes.

C. ALCHEMY MISHAP

Accidents happen, especially when you’re playing with the very essence of matter - and one just happened in the Alchemy student lab, causing a cloud of pale smoke to float all over campus. Thankfully it won’t turn anyone into a toad or kill someone.

But it does strange things to one’s vocal chords when inhaled, and unlike Helium it isn’t a one-trick pony, voices raise and lower in pitch, foreign accents, even completely different languages may start coming out of person’s mouth while they’re within in the cloud. Though that bit of an echo effect does sound pretty cool.

"Bark! Barkbarkbark!" Ammy bats at Naoki's ill-gotten gains, trying to get him to put them back. Either he gets the gist of what she wants him to do, or the mob catches up and makes him do it anyways.

She'd actually prefer the latter, all things considered. The mob might give her free food. Goddess or not, free food is awesome.

Oh, he gets it alright. He just doesn't want to do it. Who the hell does she think she is, trying to push him around like that? Naoki inches closer, trying to nudge the offending canine away with his foot.

"I'll give it back when I'm done, just get out of my way." There's a sense of urgency in his voice now, because he can almost feel the crowd breathing down his neck now. He's pretty sure he heard someone demanding his head earlier, and that's no good.

"I don't know how much that..." She mumbles at first before stopping and rerouting her words, "Could I maybe have the turquoise ones? I'll give you the rest of... however much I have. I'm sorry if it's not a lot."

At first, Ken thinks that the sound is nothing more than a fear induced trick of the mind. That maybe he misheard. But it seems he didn't as he soon finds himself in the presence of a very eccentric girl. Is she some kind of snow demon? Ken can barely hear her over his own loud beating heart as he continues to go down the slope against his will.

"Oh!" Ken lets out a small shout when the girl is suddenly flies forward and is send rolling. Ken sees things slowing down on the slope and brings himself to a stop with a small sigh of relief. Oh thank god, he thought he was a goner. Well, not as far gone as this girl. Ken made sure to stay steady as he approached.

"A-Are you okay?" He asks her. "That was quite a fall. Do you need assistance?"

[Chikage lives for training and specialization. She's instantly excited by the prospect of this class.]

I'm highly interested in this class!

[A rare enthusiastic statement is voiced.]

Are there prerequisites? Is this a magic class, or can we utilize weapons?

Chikage fishes around in her bag, past her new dress and rabbit, and other items she's purchased at the market over the last hour. At the bottom of the bag, she has three small aerosol cans. She grabs one and pulls it out for Jade.

"I make it myself. My father's concoction, really. It only works to incapacitate daemons for a time, of course, it's not lethal."

She hands Jade the can. Her label is home-made and rustic, scrawled in fancy cursive. It reads 'Nonomiya's Patented Anti-Daemon Spray! A Quick Fix When You Need It!' in French. No one has ever accused Chikage of being witty.

"It works on vampires, too," she adds as an afterthought, recalling the moon comment, "but lycanthropes are safe. If you find it useful, I have larger cans in my room."

I'm sorry, but I seem to have left my money in my room. Do you have enough I could borrow for a small snack? I've been on the mountain for a couple of hours and I didn't have breakfast.

[She smiles at him a little hesitantly, loathe to ask people for favors, but it was due to her own negligence she was in this position.]

I'll certainly pay you back, or take you out to lunch next week.

I see. Sure. I can lend you some money.

[He goes to reach for his wallet.]

Were you out snowboarding as well?

Ammy cocks her head, and then shakes it. Nope. Should've thought of all that earlier.

Not that she's going to let anybody take anyone's head off.

Meanwhile, the mob is getting even closer. One of them apparently has sharper eyes than the rest, as he notices both Naoki and Ammy.

"There he is! Professor Amaterasu, don't let him leave!" He calls, and Ammy barks back an affirmative.

Jade takes the can and grins, "Thank you very much." She may or may not use it, but it's nice to have in her stash of things in her room, at least. Just in case the need ever comes up.

A. Second-Hand Market Tour Guide

[Every market has an information booth, and the agent featured here is rather unusual. For one thing, he's standing so perfectly poised with his hands behind his back that he almost looks like a statue on display. For another, he's wearing his full uniform -- jetpack, knight-like helmet, the coat with the long tails, and knee-high boots. It's as if he stepped out of a comic book.]

[It's only when he notices that someone is moving toward him or looks somewhat lost that his head turns and he becomes more animated.]

Greetings, and welcome to the Second-Hand Market where marvels and wonders can be bought, sold, or exchanged!

[His gloved hands snaps up in a smart salute as he gestures and moves emphatically. ...Definitely something from a comic book, but when his face can't easily be seen, he has to make up for it somehow.]

How may I assist you?

[Do you need directions? A list of booths that sell certain items? Help carrying all your stuff back to your dorm? Sky High is here to help you, fellow students and respected faculty!]

B. Skiing Instructor

[Feeling sick and need to go indoors to lie down? Keith is here to help! He'll escort anyone back to the lodge, or swoop down the hillside to pick up skiiers that get stuck, lost, or cold and take them to safety. He originally came with everyone else as a student on this ski trip, but he's quickly being called into action in several leadership roles even if he's somewhat ill-suited for such. He even finds himself awkwardly shoved in front of an excited group of first-time skiers to teach them the basics.]

[And he's really not too good at that, but he's Keith, he's a good skiier, and people are depending on him. He must do his best!]

Very well! To start! Go that way.

[His arm juts to the right, pointing with a gloved and open hand.]

Really fast!

[Both arms go up as he leans forward, to signify speed.]

[Arms cross like a barrier in front of his chest, then come apart and tilt to the left.]

[Suddenly there's a blonde who's just THERE, drawn like a magnet to steel when elegant fashions started to appear. She stares longingly at the gorgeous clothes, fists pushed against her mouth.]

Those are absolutely beautiful! You're really not planning on wearing anything like that again? Ever?

[It's probably a good thing that Mina isn't rich. She doesn't have the closet space for the wardrobe she's always wanted.]

Yeah, that's about what he expected. Stupid stubborn dog. He grinds his teeth, trying to put together a solution when someone calls out to them.

Wait a minute. Naoki squints at her, forgetting momentarily about the mass of pissed-off students rapidly gaining ground on him. This is clearly more important.

"Professor?" It's not like he doesn't believe it. He's seen weirder stuff before. But the name trips him up, because he's definitely heard it somewhere before. He just can't seem to place it right now.

Alt noticed the way the student was shying away - it was hard not to, and there was something strangely familiar in how he acts. Normally he'd sneak up on someone clearly that distracted, but the boy looks like he might have a heart attack if he did that.

He clears his throat. "Can't decide?" he asks conversationally. "There are quite a lot of interesting things here today."

[Oh, she has an excited student. How exciting! She always loves it when students are enthusiastic.]

Put simply: I will tailor the training according to what you need. Weapons or magic or whatever you use, I'll take it into account.

"Thank you." Ken says sheepishly. He's embarrassed by his little slip up but receiving help cleaning it up certainly will make things go faster for clean up. The sooner it's fixed, the better the chance people won't know it's his fault. "Sorry for causing you trouble..."

Ren isn't one to quibble with someone's personal choices and preferences after all. He holds out his hand in the western style.

"Ren Amamiya. Nice to meet you, Ken."

Ammy cocks her head, thinking it over. It wasn't like she'd paid for the tassels to begin with. She'd just dug them up, like everything else on the table. Any money at all was good.

"...mmmmyip!" she says, wagging her tail. That was definitely acceptable. She wasn't going to take all of Jade's money if she had more than the tassels were actually worth, though.

"You know," Ekkehardt says conversationally, after the first few mishaps, "you can stop any time." He slides to a smooth stop, leaning on the poles he's using to keep his balance - while he can do it without them, he'd rather have something solid to dig into the snow. It was an unpredictable element, after all.

"Do you need any help?"

[Nope. Mina is doomed to become a mangled katamari of skis and poles that will make no one proud.]

[Rather than trying to stand up, she resigns herself to sitting instead with her feet turned. Despite the accident, she really doesn't seem upset at Ranko about it.]

I'm guessing you're a beginner at this kind of thing too?

[She giggles.]

"Don't worry about it. I'm happy to help." He says while collecting a few spears in his arms then stands to put them back against the rack.

"Besides, it's unsafe for everyone if we left these spears on the floor any longer. Someone could trip." Also he doesn't like the idea of a kid doing the cleaning in a weapon shop. Speaking of "By the way, why were you looking at these weapons? Aren't you a bit young to start fighting with one of these?"

[She uncaps the marker and scrawls a big fancy 'Sailor V! ♥' on the paper. Mina is actually a little pink in the face. Not only doesn't she mind, she's also highly flattered.]
