Welcome to the August AU Planning Meme for Daybreak Academy! This post is intended to help prospective players plot their AU and figure out who their characters are in this setting and where they want to go, as well as work together with other players to plan future CR, build Secret Societies and Clubs, and generally determine where they want to start their characters, and where they want them to go. In addition to posting up the form, you are encouraged to tag around to other people's forms and discuss potential CR and plans with them. This post is an open forum for all prospective players to hash out interesting ideas for their characters ahead of joining the game.

-A summary that took me forty-five minutes to type trying to explain 9S's deal to Amber seriously Nier: Automata is a Lot okay?

AU INFORMATION

CHARACTER AU NAME: 9S aka Nines (I do have a "normal" name for him, Finn Lastname-to-be-determined but he doesn't remember or respond to it)
STUDENT OR FACULTY?: Not sure tbh? 9S is...well
CHARACTER BLURB: After having lost his parents when he was very young, the boy who would eventually be called 9S was taken by a super sketchy lab known only as YoRHa. Run by the probably-not-human Red Girls, YoRHa's mission was to create super soldiers in any way they felt necessary. This lead to a lot of human experimentation, especially on those the Red Girls deemed interesting. 9S, being one of the youngest and one of the few with innate "magical" ability, was one of "interesting" ones. They decided to utilize his innate psychic ability for a variety of different terrible things and see how far they could take it. As a result, 9S was turned into what some might call a cyborg: able to interface with most technology simply by willing it, with more complicated tech requiring more focus (it's very easy to read someone's text messages, but way harder to get into a military computer mainframe). Because of this, 9S can't read minds or anything, assuming he ever had that ability in the first place. Nowadays, his "psychic" ability is mostly just in the form of blasting people with raw psychic energy, though that does leave him exhausted as the experiments left him with a weaker constitution than most.

After maybe ten years of this sort treatment, 9S managed to escape with one of the girls kept in the YoRHa labs. He's not quite sure what happened to her (or so he claims). After that, he escaped to a city and proceeded to set himself up in a dinky apartment with far too many computers and keep himself to himself for the most part.

And then he got into a fight with some probable-cultists and got stabbed and met Lia and she convinced him to maybe attend Daybreak after a few days of nagging, 9S running off and making his injuries worse, and general nihilism meeting magical girl shenanigans.
PRE-ESTABLISHED CR: So this is entirely Amber's fault, and he would know Lia when he got here. He really didn't get a chance to nor want to interact with people outside of "picking fights to maybe make the pain stop" before Lia sort of shoved herself into his life so pre-established CR would probably have to be from the whole "picking fights" thing, if anyone else is from Lia's town, or maybe on the internet since he's there 99% of the time. Otherwise, there's possible connections to YoRHa (maybe you knew about it or had heard about it?) or hell, the probable-cultists could be a connection!
DESIRED CR: ACTUAL FRIENDS this boy has none and all of his previous human interaction was kinda bullshit. Fellow nerds. People who appreciate a good bit of code.
OTHER: I am not super sure how to like. Cement all of this into Daybreak! Any ideas on what 9S's powers might be classified under would be greatly appreciated, as well as any other suggestions!

(Also in my head the probable-culitsts are Adam and Eve but for obvious reason I'm leaving them Super Generic for this.)

Becky here lived there between 2012-2014 and knows Lia personally, and remained in pretty consistent contact with her after moving away (phone calls, text messaging, online chats, etc.), before they wound up reuniting here at Daybreak in late 2019. They're now roommates.

Unfortunately I don't think he would have been out of the labs by that point but if she visited and wandered the less-great areas/paid attention to Lia's gossip she probably heard about a few guys getting literally blasted!

And Amber said Lia would have 100% told Becky about the whole Debacle with 9S so

Kokoro does know Lia, and she's been through her share of "how do normal person" despite (because of?) growing up going to Daybreak. Also, beating up evil cultists is one of her many centuries-long family traditions, so she might have heard a thing or two about that.

Does the school offer lessons in how to normal person because 9S is gonna want those...but yes! I wasn't sure if there were cults already established that would work so I left that vague, but I do have an idea for this cult if there wasn't! Granted "totally want to bring about the end of humanity by way of creeper possibly eldritch gods, possibly demons" is pretty common cult bullshit lbr but hey XD

Well, there was an event last year (the Baby Herald plot) and some other events have had similar things, so I think you can probably work with whatever you want. Everyone here is really friendly and fun to plot with and canon-weld! As for how to normal person... well, the library has teen mags, if you want to learn about Ways To Save So You Can Spend More Money On Clothes.

Though hanging out with friends was a thing, she didn't actually go out super often then because of her whole thing with being stuck in a seven-year-old body and smol child + wandering around in NY = ???. At that time, her friends, Lia included, thought she was just really small for her actual age, which she was twelve in 2014.

Lia knows about that whole not-aging thing now. The others probably don't.

As for now, Lia would absolutely tell Becky about Things That Recently Happened, though; there probably isn't too much that they'd keep from each other, and also if it involves Lia being in fights and Becky finds out that Lia's been in fights then she's gonna push to know what happened anyway. (Spending several years playing healer for people makes that sort of thing kind of your business.)

what's with all these people making soldiers out of children!!! hornet disapproves!! And understands sorta!! Maybe they can be tentative friendacquaintances and sort of mutually awkwardly nod at each other about not really having a great deal of socialisation!

as for power help, depending on what angle you want to take with it it could be some kind of feycraft, magic, or even a forced daemon pact, depending on the nature of the lab and their experiments. i know canon yorha is all about that Serving Humanity stuff but how far they're willing to go with it with utilising other inhuman sources of power could be a good question to ask

I was thinking feycraft, since afaik magic is something that's trained and...they did not do that with 9S, they just took what he had and turned it tech-y, but I wasn't sure if that'd work :|a you think it would?

also look if someone can figure out what's with the people taking kids and making them into soldiers let 9S know he'd love to cause problems on purpose for them

Well, Gunvolt here is a friend of Lia's, so that's a solid in for CR to begin with. He's generally heroic, good, and tries to be just. He has magical powers as a Candle that make him command lightning and electricity. No, he won't fry 9S's computers, don't worry!

But of course, Gunvolt would be on board for wanting to punch out both cultists and YoRHa, because some of that hits pretty close to home for him too. He's got quite a beef with people/organizations that do stuff like what happened to 9S, given he's been actively working against a Japanese company called Sumeragi Group that's big on exploiting Candles for power, energy, and profit (And while he's *not one* in Daybreak, Gunvolt himself was a victim of them in canon), YoRHa would pretty swiftly go on his shit list too. So if Nines needs a staunch ally in the "maybe don't turn magic kids into tools" battle, he'll get one pretty quick.

And for powers, if it's a naturally occurring power for Nines, it could be anything from fae heritage or a gift, daemonic heritage, or in theory it could even be a Flame. Flames work pretty well as a general "all purpose" sort of thing where powers don't always fit in an easy categorization and allow greater flexibility. Gunvolt's powers in his canon, for example, are like a mishmash of psychic/biological stuff as a result of human evolution, but I transitioned them to a Flame in Daybreak and they work pretty much the same way. So that's a decent option too, and Nines' Flame might've forcibly awakened early under duress, as a possible explanation of why he got them so young, if you want to go that route.

ngl once 9S realizes that there are other people who are down to destroy YoRHa he will be very keen on maybe doing that. or finding who their sponsor was and going that route so I am super down for that CR!

I was leaning towards fae-related stuff since....that is very much my jam won't even lie, but maybe the Flame idea would work better :|a they did take his powers and make them more tech-y after all

Either going after the organization or sponsor would suit him just fine, though he'd want to help whoever might still be stuck in their clutches too. He's just that kind of guy when given the chance.

And in the end, I think either choice will work pretty well, depending which way you want to go. We play pretty loose with some of the classification of things here mostly, and most of them are to facilitate creativity or give very general guidance. So it could be fae, it could be a Flame, whichever way you feel like playing it, and whichever way you think you can get more out of it that satisfies the arc you wanna play with.

I'm now realizing that there's a very high chance that Nines is gonna get to deal with both of my characters, not just one of them.

Yes, there's Becky, but Lia is also friends with (and, when it comes to Daybreak sending its students out on missions, also a somewhat-frequent teammate of) my other OC in the game, Desidera (

unlogic), who is a mage that is more than partly-daemonic because Reasons. She's a really nice girl, though, and no that is not sarcasm.

Though, unlike Becky, Desi never actually met Lia before coming to Daybreak, and probably wouldn't have been told about Nines before meeting him.

(On top of that, Desi is Gunvolt's girlfriend here in the game, so getting in good with him means 9S would probably be meeting her at some point regardless.)

She has a huge, huge problem with people not being allowed to choose their own path/being made to do stuff against their will/etc., so if/when she learns about the whole YoRHa thing she will be pretty mad about it, and just like that Nines would have the support of another girl that can punch really, really hard.

GENERAL INFORMATION

PLAYER NAME: Laura
CHARACTER NAME: Yarrow
CANON: Original Canon
BLURB: For the Canon world, it's 5e, so all kinds of weird races, dragons, etc etc. For Yarrow himself, he's an ex-slave of the yuan-ti (snake people) (sneaple) and managed to somehow escape and get to a completely different continent...with absolutely no memory of how that happened. He has semi-uncontrollable magical powers of the elemental variety, and is trying to figure out what his purpose in the world is, and what it means to have some amount of free will. Also, casually providing the group with unsettling information about the best ways to murder and manipulate people. By d&d standards, his alignment is "neutral good, mostly."

Oh quick edit, he's a Storm Barbarian. So very tanky, rages, and has strange powers that erupt from his body. Specifically fire, electricity, and ice. He also has some ability to manipulate elements around him - controlling nonmagical fire, earth, and water, along with other things.

AU INFORMATION

CHARACTER AU NAME: Yarrow Mayu
STUDENT OR FACULTY?: Probably student?? Faculty would be alright too, but idk yet
CHARACTER BLURB: Yarrow is Quechua. In the D&D game I left it rather vague, and most of the time I'll point to his unique situation to keep it vague here too, as I'm only so familiar with the culture.

How to play out his captivity is where I'm having trouble. Human trafficking is a thing, obviously, but I really don't want to get into the sexual issues there, especially not in a modern setting where it's very possible players have been directly affected by that. But that situation is also part of his core character, in that he was held for so long against his will since childhood that he's having issues with finding his personal identity. (Along with PTSD.) See below for the way I think that could be resolved??
PRE-ESTABLISHED CR: I'm thinking Yarrow was probably outright kidnapped as a young child by a particularly malicious Contracted, who somehow found out he was an Candle before the magical signs started cropping up. He waited until Yarrow presented with the magic to start experimenting, and in the meantime left Yarrow to the care of other "servants" to be taught how to be useful.

So unlike many others, Yarrow grew up with the knowledge of the magic he had. Once his own powers kicked in, the Contracted began to shape him into a weapon. I figure the Contracted stepped on the wrong toes at some point and ended up on the wrong side of some Hunters or Rune Guards and ended up dying and having his mansion scrubbed out for dangerous magical items. Which happens to include Yarrow. After some "wtf that's a whole ass person" they figured the Academy was probably the best place to send him.

I don't know much about specific people though, I wandered here through enablemeplz.
DESIRED CR: Friendly CR!!! And also people to challenge in physical contests. Someone to coax him into relaxing a little more. Though negative cr is fun too, though at this point Yarrow tends to be quite passive.
OTHER: Idk if my suggested thing is too dramatic, or if there are any things that could be made to work out better. I also figure that his education will be all over the place, so I figure a handwoven "recovery period" of 6 months or so, to at least have kinda sorta functional.

Anyway, tagging schedule - I tend to go fast in short bursts, go quiet, repeat. I like 3rd person prose best but I can work with literally anything.

oh man, yarrow sounds like he's been through quite a lot! I don't think the stuff you have now is too dramatic - we've got plenty of folks with heavy backstories, and i think that might even be a bonding point/jumping off point for new CR!

provided he wants to open up about it, which he might not,

AS FOR PRE-ESTABLISHED CR....Ekkehardt is part of the medical staff and definitely would at least be hovering for a bit to make sure he's recovering from what he was put through in captivity so Yarrow could easily know him through that, if you're ok with it!
