[Coincidentally, someone else is also settling into the school over summer vacation. Caim is already in the cafeteria when Desidera arrives, his own food mostly untouched while he buries his nose in a tome that's comically large in comparison to its reader. It's not obvious what kind of book it is, but it certainly looks thick and wordy enough to be too advanced for a kid his size—which might be the reason why he picked it in the first place. He's new here, so he has to establish his intellectual dominance to all the inferior kids in his age group, after all.
As fascinating as his book might be, though, he does eventually take notice of the new person in the room. His attention starts to drift, and before long he's shamelessly staring at this very interesting individual sitting a few tables away from him.
