August is the last month of break before the return of school, all over Europe offices are empty as it was peak time for employees to take their well-earned vacation. The weather is still scorching, and brains are melting, but it won’t be long before autumn comes - so enjoy it while you can.


A. Voluntelling

While the Academy pays for all expenses trips to exotic locales for vacation, there is a quiet expectation that when problems arise that students will jump up and take care of the problem wherever it arises, even if it means interrupting a well-earned vacation for a brief time.

This time, a nightclub in the Azores is suffering from the influx of spirits of early portuguese settlers partying in the club and becoming quite rowdy; how do you plan to get them to move along? It's most certainly not a job for a single person, and you don't want to wrack up the long-distance charges for a certain business to get rid of them, so it's all up to you.

B. Lay over

The flights back to Daybreak, while done on privately owned jets are still beholden to mother nature, and a large bank of thunderclouds have grounded the planes for the next several hours, leaving awaiting students and staff to try to find ways to entertain themselves while stranded in the airport. Charge ports are limited, food and airport fantasy books are overpriced and you can’t leave the terminal - how do you even survive?

C. Come Dance all Night
In Soliel, the Azores, Miami - and other parts unknown, fliers for a free concert appear advertising bands one has never heard of, and it soon becomes apparent the fliers are invisible to those not aware of the supernatural.

Going to the listed locations will prove that the adverts were legit, as bands of witches, elves, and more playing strange but extremely enjoyable hybrid music as people mosh in front of the stage, or floating above it. And overpriced vendor food was hawked from popcorn to more exotic fare such as dewdrops (with humans cautioned against partaking it without a handy friend nearby). All in all it's a fun night of music.

Oh, yeah. Gotta learn the mundane stuff too to be a real, functioning person.

Didn't know that was one of our expectations. Think it's required credit before we graduate?

[She thinks about it for a moment, before shrugging.]

Honestly, I don’t know. I doubt it - this isn’t really your typical school.

[bolderfell]

[He shrugs, too.]

From what I can tell, it's not like typical schools necessarily do a great job turning out functional people, either. So maybe it doesn't matter.

[Therion lets that sit a moment.]

So what is your favorite class, then?

Maybe it doesn’t.

[She tilts her head, considering.]

I like Professor Kiske’s class. He teaches elemental magic control, and it’s pretty interesting stuff.

[bolderfell]

Huh. [After thinking about it, he rubs the back of his neck.] Sounds pretty heady. Is it hard?

[transfusionem]

Not really. [Despite this, she laughs.] Still managed to pass, and I’m pretty terrible at magic.

[bolderfell]

Ha, me too. I can only make a little flame.

[Of like, literal fire, not the Candle stuff.]

That's what they mean by elemental, right? More like fantasy arcade games, less like science.

Oh, really? [She perks up at the mention of fire.] That’s pretty cool!

And, yeah, that’s exactly what they mean by elemental.

[He looks a little bashful.]

It's not that impressive. [Certainly not compared to his other abilities.] It just comes in useful from time to time.

[Enough about him, though.]

I suppose your talents lie in other fields?

[transfusionem]

I dunno, it seems pretty impressive to me! [She knows nothing of magic, but she’s... Trying.]

You could say that, yeah. My talents seem to lie with the physical. Or baking.

[bolderfell]

[He takes her in for a moment, quiet, then shrugs with a faint smile.]

Baking. Now that's what I call impressive. Making food out of nothing? Nice.

[It's a subtle sense, but if Therion dug any deeper, it would've felt like prying, he thinks.]

It's something to do with the time.

[She shrugs, as if she possibly needs any help keeping herself busy.]

Plus, other people seem to like getting free food.

Uh-huh. Do you take requests?

Yeah, of course. It gets boring making the same thing all the time.

[And she doesn't even charge for it, smh.]

[His eyebrows rise, and then he ducks into his hand with a surprised little laugh.

(It hides the flicker of something genuine across his face when he realizes he is surprised.)]

Hahah, sorry. I wasn't expecting such a straightforward answer. And here I was all set to wheedle my way into a school year of free pie.

[He rolls the aglet of his hoodie's drawstring between his fingers, looking pleasantly sheepish.]

[Adelaide watches him for a moment, before chuckling softly.]

You weren't? [Well, she supposes most people would probably play it more coy.] Well, it's no trouble - unless you want some sort of needlessly complicated pie.

[She doesn't even know how you could complicate pie.]

[bolderfell]

If you're gonna put it that way... Gotta admit, I don't know how complicated börek is to make. But you've got a willing taste tester if you ever want to find out.

I have no idea either! But I’m willing to give it a try. [Laughs.]
