OCTOBER TEST DRIVE MEME

As the temperature drops and the leaves fall, the Academy reopens for a new term and classes begin. October’s approach has also brought with it not just a change in weather, but a rise in supernatural phenomena around the school and the neighbouring town of Soleil, as spirits rise in activity and excitement in anticipation for Halloween.

A. ELEMENTAL BLESSING
The more stressful things that have happened over the last few months have brought some new, strange visitors to Daybreak, possibly by the request of the higher-ups. As students adjust to their new classwork and routines, they may see blue and purple spirits fly through the halls and over the grounds of the Academy. The more avian-esque purple ones gather in places with strong winds and open air when at rest; the blue ones collect in the various fountains and ponds when not hopping through the Academy’s halls, happy to swim around (and alarm passerby who have never seen them before).

Though they’re capable of speech, and some might be particularly chatty, they tend to leave conversations for after use of their powers. Whether it’s a harsh breeze that blows away mental cobwebs or a soothing rain that melts away aches and pains, these spirits seem to know exactly what anyone encountering them needs to spend the rest of the day refreshed and strengthened for their trials ahead.

B. PUMPKIN PREPARATIONS
What’s a Halloween celebration without pumpkins to carve? No celebration at all, of course. But Halloween is only one night, and one does not simply learn to carve pumpkins in the space of one night. In acknowledgement of the fact that not everyone shares the same cultural traditions, pumpkin carving classes will be held regularly from the start of October to the end - students and staff alike are free to come along and practice their skills for the upcoming festival, or simply vandalise these poor pumpkins and make a mess. Those who are more culinarily inclined can reap the efforts of their fellow carvers and be taught how to use a treasure trove of seeds and flesh to be used in all sorts of recipes.

If you’d like to do something more difficult and traditional, a fine selection of turnips - and notable examples - are available. Though they might turn out looking less cute and more ...horrifying. But maybe that’s what you like? Nobody will judge you.

C. COSTUME CRAFTING
In preparation for Halloween, the secondhand market on the Academy’s grounds has set up shop once more. Throwing its metaphorical doors open to anyone who wants a wide range of reasonably priced attire, they’ve gone into special storage to pull out costumes, costume weapons, and other accessories fit for a Halloween celebration...some of them with strange or odd minor magics still lingering around them, courtesy of their last owner.
Everything is labeled appropriately, but those throwing on clothing with reckless abandon may find themselves victim of some very eye-catching special effects when they least expect it.

Pumpkin Preparations

Pharos had experience Halloween before, but he'd never done much with it. Apparently he'd managed to escape from and effectively hide from his parents three years in a young basically right after he could walk, so they didn't really fancy trying it again when he's got more intention and instead they just bought him candy he liked and stay home with him and sometimes had a party or something. He didn't really mind; he didn't have friends to go trick or treating with, so it amounted to much of the same thing.

But he's here at school and it seems like everyone else is doing it, so he might as well try, right? Which is how Pharos has acquired a pumpkin and a knife that was probably meant for the high schoolers who know how to use actual knives and not the eight year old who probably has never touched one this large before. Someone stop him before he hurts himself?

Ah--

[V makes his way over when he spots the knife. He picks up one of the tools meant for the younger students on the way and puts it down near the boy's hand.]

Here. This might be a bit safer to use instead of a knife.

[Pharos blinks up at V before looking down at the much safer, much less effective looking implement.]

But it doesn't look as good. Won't this one cut better?

[He holds up said knife to demonstrate. It's basically a butcher's knife. Who let him have this.]

A... knife of that sort is more suited to meat, rather than a pumpkin, I believe...

[Why wasn't anyone watching the knives!!!]

... And I imagine the nurse would be very irritated with me if you got hurt with that knife and he knew I'd let you keep using it.

Oh. [The argument about it being more suited for meat is apparently what gets through to him; he puts it down and picks up the safety knife and starts trying to saw at the top.]

But the nurse wouldn't be made if I hadn't hurt myself. And I hadn't, so it's ok.

[He's going to... get that knife out of here. And hiss at whoever's watching to keep their eyes on who takes what instead of just their phone.

In the meantime, an odd panther pads over to watch as Pharos works.]

If that-- [Nodding to the safety knife.] --proves ineffective... I'll get you something that will work a little better.

[THAT ISN'T A DAMN BUTCHER KNIFE GOOD LORD...]

[Pharos doesn’t get far in his attempt at carving before he spots the panther and even though by all rights it should probably be terrifying to him he gives it a little smile.]

Hello kitty. [He pauses in his efforts to bend down and hold out a hand to the creature.]

[V glances over... and then can't help but smile a little at the sight.

The creature lets out a rumble in greeting, sniffing at the boy's hand briefly before pushing his head into the hand.]

His name is Shadow.

[There’s... something there. Pharos doesn’t know what, just something that makes him smile a little wider.]

That’s a good name. I like it. [He carefully pats Shadow’s head, scritching behind her ears.] is she your friend?

[He nods as Shadow leans into the touch.]

Shadow's one of my familiars. The two of us have been friends for years by now.

Familiar?

[Pharos is very new and neither of his parents had anything to do with this world, so he's got some catching up to do. But he'll still pet Shadow, effectively ignoring his pumpkin and any and all knives for the moment.]

[ Why is a child holding a knife around here not even remotely surprising at this point? What does that say about her life choices? Anyways.

Making her approach very obvious (she has Unicorn with her, but—no, let's avoid mishaps), Minako lets out an appraising hum before crossing her arms at her chest. He's got an eye, she'll have to give him that. It couldn't have been hard to carry it all the way out here. ]

That's a nice one you found. Did somebody help you pick it out?

[ Maybe the person who gave him a freaking knife? Seriously, who does that. ]

[Pharos looks over at her, and-- oh. He doesn't know if it's because she looks kind of familiar, or that she's pretty, or that she clearly has good taste in pumpkins, but he kind of immediately likes her. He gives her a shy little smile, shaking her head.]

No... everyone looked busy and I didn't want to bother them.

[He'll speak to her in English, but there's a slight French lilt to the words. It's pretty darn cute.]

[ Oh, that's adorable. She's always had a soft spot for kids, but seeing the shy smile on his face makes her want to help him out even more. Coming closer, she puts her hands on her hips before giving him a warm, confident grin. ]

You're in luck, then. I'm not busy, and I happen to be pretty good at this kind of thing.

[ Probably. ]

Do you know what kind of face you want to give it?

[Pharos shakes his head, looking back at the pumpkin.]

I hadn't really thought about it yet... are they supposed to be scary faces?

They don't have to be scary. Maybe it's a friendly pumpkin, or a silly pumpkin. You can give it any kind of face you want.

[ She hums in thought before getting an idea. Moving the pumpkin briefly, she tears a piece of newspaper from underneath. Digging through her bag, she offers the torn paper and a marker to him. ]

Why don't you draw something on this, then we can carve it out.

[Pharos nods, taking the paper and the marker and thinking for a long moment. When he starts drawing, it's sort of the typical scary pumpkin face with slightly different eyes.

He seems pleased with it, but he looks up to her for approval.] Is this ok?

[ Is it just her, or does that face look familiar? ]

Yep, just like that! All right, and now...

[ Minako looks around the general area before finding some tape, and a wooden skewer. That should work. ]

Let's put this on your pumpkin. Then I'll show you a cool trick.

[Pharos nods, taking the paper and taping it against the pumpkin.] Like this?
