With Winter Quarter in full swing, students can often be found dashing madly about the halls, with part-time jobs, classes, and other events and interests occupying much of their time.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's all work. Daybreak Academy tries to offer its students an abundance of leisure time to relax and unwind. With Valentine's Day fast approaching, romance is in the air as news of the Feast of St. Valentine and the Valentine's Ball begin to spread around campus. Already, talks of fashion and finding the right date are buzzing among the student body. With the winter months winding down, the oppressive chill of Winter is starting to loosen its grip, but there's still plenty of snow left for those who want to take one last run at Daybreak's slopes. As midterms approach, the school is as vibrant and busy as ever.

A. SECOND-HAND MARKET

Daybreak Academy has existed for several centuries. Throughout all that time, its ethos has been that of honing the abilities of deserving students, no matter what their birthright or social standing. Even still, the lavish galas befitting the riches of the school continued to have an impact, as poorer students unable to acquire proper attire were often locked out. To remedy this, Daybreak Academy began a tradition that it has upheld ever since - the Second-Hand Market. Hosted in an ever-expanding number of classrooms, the Second-Hand Market brings out all of the clothing, weapons, and other items that have been acquired, resold, or otherwise donated to the academy throughout its lifespan.

Here, any students and faculty can acquire any number of items, such as formal wear, weaponry, and other items for a fraction of the price. Most items are in decent condition, although there are some old items in disrepair that are even cheaper. They can come from just about anywhere in the world and just about any era, and you are able to exchange equivalent items, weapons and armor in both magical and mundane varieties, and formal clothing. Especially among richer students, the tradition is to donate any new clothing or items you commission for social events once the event is complete, to keep the stock current and available for the students who might need it.

With the upcoming ball, the Second-Hand Market is once again open for the first half of February. Staffed completely by students, it is frequently bustling with customers, many of whom not only buy outfits or weapons for the upcoming dance, but also spares they can use for their own projects.

B. LAST CHANCE ON THE SLOPES

With the Winter season winding down, the Arctic Slopes are entering their final months of operation for the season. For those hoping to get some skiing or snowboarding in, now will be the last chance for quite some time. As such, the lodge is full of students trying to take advantage of the last chance on the slopes. Winter has lingered this year, and the snow pack is still dense, making it perfect for one last hurrah. With the rush of students and faculty alike, the lodge is stocked with warm meals and hot chocolate to fill people's bellies after a long day on the slopes.

C. ALCHEMY MISHAP

Accidents happen, especially when you’re playing with the very essence of matter - and one just happened in the Alchemy student lab, causing a cloud of pale smoke to float all over campus. Thankfully it won’t turn anyone into a toad or kill someone.

But it does strange things to one’s vocal chords when inhaled, and unlike Helium it isn’t a one-trick pony, voices raise and lower in pitch, foreign accents, even completely different languages may start coming out of person’s mouth while they’re within in the cloud. Though that bit of an echo effect does sound pretty cool.

Despite the flimsiness of the excuse, Ryoga buys it completely, even with the reaction he had. Slowly, he forces himself to relax. "I'll pay." He offers, holding his hands up, sensing her distress.

Angua heaved a sigh of relief and buttons went shooting across the room as the shirt finally gave out.

He blinks, staring completely gobsmacked as the button flies, before his eyes widened as it fully registered what just happened.

Ryoga lets out a silent gasp - showing too long canines - before clapping his hands over his face, turning around in the same motions.

Angua turned red, then slammed the closet door shut again.

A moment later, her voice came within, slightly muffled and slightly strained. "Maybe a slightly larger shirt! Size 14!"

There was some embarrassed stammering, before a shirt was quickly pushed in between the cracks - a black tee with PARTY CANNON in a multicolor balloon font.

"I think that should fit...."

Angua bounced back first. She was at least used to casual nudity, even if it wouldn't really fly around here. She struggled into the shirt and then emerged from the closet with a confidence that didn't belong to someone who had just accidentally flashed someone, and CERTAINLY didn't belong to someone who had medieval poofy pantaloons on to combo with her modern black band t-shirt.

Desperate times. Desperate measures.

"Thanks. I owe you one."

He had finished paying the vendor, a little surprised Angua came out so quickly.

"It's no problem... people losing clothes is a more common problem here." And one he knew all too well.

Bee had been around the school long enough to see plenty of ridiculous explanations for why someone had to steal clothes. Not every reason, or even most of them, but plenty.

A [Ever since Tadashi was recruited to Daybreak, he's mostly kept to himself. Work hard, study hard, make sure the recruitment wasn't wasted on him. But even he lets himself take breaks now and again. He hears about the Second-Hand Market and realizes it's that time again. He doesn't go to the galas, but he likes to browse through the Market sometimes. Sometimes it's too much to hope for something interesting he can use, but every now and then he can find something. Tadashi usually comes to poke around the end of the season, when there are less people. He's here, around the end of the final few days poking through. He's not interested in the clothes or weapons, he's digging for anything else. Leftover tech, knick-knacks, that sort of thing. Maybe he's reaching for that same old music player, or the only hydraulic cylinder in the pile.] B [Before he came to Daybreak, he never got to do much with snow. But he's learned to enjoy it when it's in season. Going out snowboarding? Is absolutely on Tadashi's list before it's too late. It's one of the few sports he enjoys doing. So he can be found in the lodge helping someone pick out their equipment, or on the slopes helping someone else get the basics down. He pulls off and balls up his yellow jacket, and tosses the Autobrand branded coat Angua's way.

"You can borrow it for now. I'm gonna need it back though."

[ There's already a nerd sitting here picking through the junk. In fact he was just reaching for that broken servo at the same moment that Tadashi does, causing them to bump hands. Peter jolts a bit, looking up and already mouthing an apology --

Only to stop, his face lighting up. Tadashi's older, of course (and so is Peter), but he'd know that face anywhere. ]

[He stops when he bumps hands but stares for a second. The face is almost recognizable, but it's shaped a little differently. He stalls for just a second, then:] ... Peter?

[ Two-ish years is a lot for a teenager, okay. He's a little taller (small change) and strangely muscular (huge change). But otherwise the same doofy face, just a little leaner and more adult as opposed to something more childlike. ]

[He's still staring, trying to place that lanky little teenager he met before this place.] I've been here for a few years, just-- When did you get here?

[ He'd been so bitty before. More like Hiro in a lot of ways. Now? ... Now he's still closer to Hiro's age than Tadashi's but. Not quite so tiny. ]

Like a month ago? A month and a half? Since the start of winter term or whatever.

Wow. [Man, he really has had his head stuffed down in the gears.] Sorry I missed you getting here. Welcome to the Academy.

['The real word' huh. He looks back down at the junk pile, moving a few things aside.] This place isn't so bad. [Sure, he misses his aunt and his brother and his cat and the cafe and his own food, but y'know.] You get used to it.

Yeah? I guess you'd know after being here a few years.

[ A pause. ]

Does your aunt know? Or your brother?

[tadeadshi]

[Why Peter.] ...They know I got recruited somewhere, but not... where. Hasn't really been a good time to tell them. [Tadashi.] What about your aunt?

[made_up_names]

[ Look. He asked for a reason, and that reason is. Well. This.

He looks a bit sheepish, rubbing at the back of his neck. ]

Yeah, ditto? I mean, she knows it's in France, but not what it is.

[tadeadshi]

[He watches him for a second, then smiles. It's all sympathy here.] If you want, I could show you the courier I use to get letters and cards over. Less conspicuous and less questions.
