Test-Drive Meme - February

TEST DRIVE MEME
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

With Winter Quarter in full swing, students can often be found dashing madly about the halls, with part-time jobs, classes, and other events and interests occupying much of their time.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's all work. Daybreak Academy tries to offer its students an abundance of leisure time to relax and unwind. With Valentine's Day fast approaching, romance is in the air as news of the Feast of St. Valentine and the Valentine's Ball begin to spread around campus. Already, talks of fashion and finding the right date are buzzing among the student body. With the winter months winding down, the oppressive chill of Winter is starting to loosen its grip, but there's still plenty of snow left for those who want to take one last run at Daybreak's slopes. As midterms approach, the school is as vibrant and busy as ever.

A. SECOND-HAND MARKET

Daybreak Academy has existed for several centuries. Throughout all that time, its ethos has been that of honing the abilities of deserving students, no matter what their birthright or social standing. Even still, the lavish galas befitting the riches of the school continued to have an impact, as poorer students unable to acquire proper attire were often locked out. To remedy this, Daybreak Academy began a tradition that it has upheld ever since - the Second-Hand Market. Hosted in an ever-expanding number of classrooms, the Second-Hand Market brings out all of the clothing, weapons, and other items that have been acquired, resold, or otherwise donated to the academy throughout its lifespan.

Here, any students and faculty can acquire any number of items, such as formal wear, weaponry, and other items for a fraction of the price. Most items are in decent condition, although there are some old items in disrepair that are even cheaper. They can come from just about anywhere in the world and just about any era, and you are able to exchange equivalent items, weapons and armor in both magical and mundane varieties, and formal clothing. Especially among richer students, the tradition is to donate any new clothing or items you commission for social events once the event is complete, to keep the stock current and available for the students who might need it.

With the upcoming ball, the Second-Hand Market is once again open for the first half of February. Staffed completely by students, it is frequently bustling with customers, many of whom not only buy outfits or weapons for the upcoming dance, but also spares they can use for their own projects.

B. LAST CHANCE ON THE SLOPES

With the Winter season winding down, the Arctic Slopes are entering their final months of operation for the season. For those hoping to get some skiing or snowboarding in, now will be the last chance for quite some time. As such, the lodge is full of students trying to take advantage of the last chance on the slopes. Winter has lingered this year, and the snow pack is still dense, making it perfect for one last hurrah. With the rush of students and faculty alike, the lodge is stocked with warm meals and hot chocolate to fill people's bellies after a long day on the slopes.

C. ALCHEMY MISHAP

Accidents happen, especially when you’re playing with the very essence of matter - and one just happened in the Alchemy student lab, causing a cloud of pale smoke to float all over campus. Thankfully it won’t turn anyone into a toad or kill someone.

But it does strange things to one’s vocal chords when inhaled, and unlike Helium it isn’t a one-trick pony, voices raise and lower in pitch, foreign accents, even completely different languages may start coming out of person’s mouth while they’re within in the cloud. Though that bit of an echo effect does sound pretty cool.

Reira Akaba | Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V

[personal profile] soft_focus 2019-01-26 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[A - SECONDHAND]

[Reira isn't technically enrolled just yet, but the staff who have been helping with her recovery and catch up are pretty sure it'll be 'soon'. Will it be soon enough that she can just go to a ball? Well...no. Definitely not, they're certain- the kid's a highly sensitive empath, and putting her in the middle of a ball already is going to be pushing it, let alone a ball that will knowingly be ambushed by a pile of daemons.

'Also she could be a liability', at least one person notes- there's that whole possession thing after all.

But that doesn't mean they can't use the market as a stepping stone.

Reira is given a small amount of money- not to mention a wallet to hold it- and a simple instruction. Currently, she has successfully gotten a basic amount of clothing that she seems to like, and even certain school supplies. Now, she gets to pick something for herself. Just go through the market, and find something nice that she wants. Easy!

...Maybe?

While she certainly stares at, and cautiously picks up a good many things as she goes along the tables...the girl in fairly plain jeans and a sweater is not necessarily looking at things 9 year olds should be holding. Whoever is acting as the supervisor in all of this may or may not be groaning into their hands right now.
]

[C - ALCHEMIC BIRDSONG]

[Reira once claimed, to a certain semi-skeletal musician, that as far as she was aware music was just those sounds that came out of the plastic instruments left at her sick-bay bed occasionally for her to play with. Sort of boring, kind of tinny, and...well. Not music. Maybe she's learned since then, maybe not, but right now she's not working with those anyway. She was supposed to work on one of these science tests to determine where she was at on the catch-up lessons (she's been doing very well with those, and fortunately for a lot of people, school work was one of the things she was almost immediately able to do once they refreshed her writing skills).

Right now she's peering out the window as a cloud of...Somethings pass along by. She, along with some sort of sprite, peer out with wide eyed curiousity- and... She squints at the cloud. Maybe it was a bird- maybe it was someone inside that smoke cloud? But-

She's answering the bird sound she heard.

Prepare to be baffled, whoever is passing the window or the room.

[D - IRIS]

[Among the things to get Reira introduced to, is the network. It's been a bit interesting explaining it to her, but as with most things, she picks up fast- and what better way to get someone introduced, than a quiz! (The survey hosts, fortunately, are aware a non-student is being given this chance today)

So, 'REIRA' (they still haven't figured out who gave her that name, or why she knew to spell it that way, since it's not exactly Russian)...is online.
]

What makes the things on the list 'Great'?

Great is supposed to be 'really good', but I know something that's more great than the whole list.

[Reira your sprites are not Great Beasts.]

Well, that's the term used in the community for creatures thought to be mythical or non-existent by regular humans.

Oh ok

But the best ones still aren't on the list

What makes a human regular though? Do they really not know about all of these?

[The minder, a big white wolf, is well aware of how children can get into things they're not supposed to. Case in point, the wolf pup that's bouncing around them.

Amaterasu carefully herds Reira towards more age appropriate items, making sure Chibiterasu is following. Toys! Books! Second-hand game systems! If there's something Reira really wants that she can't quite afford, Ammy is willing to chip in. She's already going to have to put up money for that ball her son is eyeing.]

[Amaterasu, no doubt, has been one of the most successful of 'minders' for the time being. Reira doesn't quite trust most people entirely- while she hasn't exactly explained why (assuming anyone has even asked her directly for that matter), it doesn't change that it takes a while before she's able to confidently speak to most human beings.

Which appears to be where Amaterasu is shining in that regard. Intelligent as the wolf is, the god is just as equally open in what her emotions seem to be as far as Reira is concerned. Between that and being large, and fluffy...well, she's just that much more keen on being under Ammy's watch.

And also, did she mention fluffy??? Very soft. Reira picks up what looks to be a small handheld device of sorts, but rather than asking about buying anything simply looks at it, and then to Ammy with evident confusion.
]

Umn...

...What do these do..? [She asks, frowning at it.] ...I thought games were bigger things.

[It does say 'Gamepal' on it, so at least she figured that much out.]

[Thankfully, the sun goddess is more familiar with advanced technology, even if she has a slightly harder time than most using it. She manages, but the lack of opposable thumbs makes it a little tricky sometimes.

Despite her thumblessness, when Ammy bats at the gamepal she's able to turn it on and start the game that's plugged in. At that point Reira should notice that hitting the buttons makes the character on the screen move.]

[Any advantage a goddess can get is a good advantage in this day and age. Reira's eyes widen with interest as the screen turns on, and tapping a button or two those eyes widen even more.] Ah-!

...It's like the computer was..! [She exclaims, before the excitement sinks back into confusion.] Mnh...but for games instead of for talking then..?

[There is a bit of silence as she fiddles with the game for a little bit- just enough to get that character really moving- but in the end hits what Ammy did to turn it on and puts it back. It's definitely gotten her curiosity, but...] Umnh...

...I can come back later, if I don't see something else then... [She decides, nodding slowly.

No one's told her how fast stuff gets snapped up in these things, huh.

[As soon as Reira is distracted by something else, Ammy glares at the student selling the game systems. If he knows what's good for him that Gamepal will still be here when they come back for it. He doesn't want to see an upset child, because an upset child means an upset Amaterasu.

Satisfied he's gotten the hint, Ammy follows along beside Reira to wherever she decides to look next.]

[Now, where DOES Reira go next...a lot of what's up for grabs is formal wear, and even weaponry. Neither of which (fortunately?) have her attention.

...

Except maybe...

It looks like a throw blanket? There's some odd runes along the edges- potentially from some other student trying to charm it for something.
] Oh!

...It's soft...

[It also has runes on it child, who knows what those are meant to do.]
