Summer's here in force, the sun beating down like a hammer. Fortunately, there's still plenty to do to take your mind off the heat...

A. Swap Market Stalls
The year turns, the seasons change, and the swap market is back in business, here to offer their many exciting new wares for very reasonable prices, honestly, would they lie to you?

It’s no bad way to while away an afternoon, wandering through the rows of colorful stalls and examining the various offerings, both magical and mundane. Maybe you can buy a trinket for a friend, or a treat for yourself?

Besides, it’s nice to have something fun to do, considering the rumors that prom may be cancelled this year. Gossip claims that it’s a punishment for an unclear incident of student misbehavior, and that two seniors and a grad student have been expelled.

Given that no one can actually seem to pin down who the three people in question were, this part is probably pure rumor.

Probably.

(Hey, gossip is a valuable service, too. Can’t stop the market from talking…)

Just try not to take anything without paying. After some incidents last year, they’ve implemented a few new security features.

B. Midsummer Prep
Every good party requires a good deal of preparation beforehand, and various staff and student volunteers are beginning to set up for the upcoming celebration of the changing seasons. This year’s midsummer festival is shaping up to be a fun little affair, with all the usual traditions- food, campfires, ritual combat displays…

What, you’re not used to that last one?

Yes, well, that does explain why the preparations include both hanging up streamers and carefully warding a small wrestling ring against all sorts of magical damage.

Whether you’re here to help with the setup or just observing for the sake of curiosity, they’ll be working on it in bits and pieces for the next several days.

C. Collecting Sunshine
Sunlight has always been potent, as any of the Undead can tell you, and there is a way to save it for a rainy day. Sunstones cut in a particular way are excellent ways to magically store sunlight to be unleashed at later days, or to add to higher-level potions.

It wouldn’t do just to place them in a window and be done with it, no - it has to have direct exposure, paired with the energy of the young holding it up into the sun, or so the staff insist. One may have a sneaking suspicion that this is an excuse to make the students get more exercise.

Midsummer

Something the matter?

[A soft, accented voice calls out after one of the glances, it was the vampire... wearing an ungodly busy bright shirt, his left arm bandaged. While he's keeping away from the actual bonfire construction, he does seem to be helping to fill in the colors in some of the banners]

Ahaha, Mister Holmes, where did you come from?!

[ as soon as romani notices the vampire, he immediately straightens up, laughing sheepishly in a weak attempt to cover his concern. ]

It's...probably nothing. You know, maybe just thinking a little too much? What is with that shirt anyways? You definitely won't get lost in a crowd.

[ d i v e r s i o n ]

What's wrong with my shirt, Dr. Archaman?

[He frowns slightly, looking down at it]

Though it does seem like you are a bit out of it.

Nothing, nothing. [ it's hideously bright? jeez holmes, he's an amnesiac and he knows how to dress better already*

*your mileage may vary ]
Maybe I just saw someone wearing something similar in a movie?

[ ... ] Is there any reason for all of the spells...? I thought it was just a bonfire that was happening.

Oh - well, there are quite a few things going on.

Midsummer is a great deal among those in the veil, so you have spells that will fire off in the same fashion as fireworks, to make the flames change color, and keep it from burning anyone if they fall in during the leaps.

[leaps?]

[personal profile] finalring 2020-06-14 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[ it all makes sense, and romani seems to nod until... ]

Leaps? What do you mean?
improbablenotimpossible: (A bit of make up work)

[personal profile] improbablenotimpossible 2020-06-14 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Some kind of ancient fertility and purification rite. Young people jump over the bonfires to purify themselves in some parts of the world and assure their health and youth.

Sometimes it's to jump-start fortune-telling. Or given the students here, it's just something to prove themselves with.

[He continues painting as he explains]

[ what the actual fuck is wrong with daybreak academy is something that romani asks himself on a weekly basis. ]

That sounds dangerous. What if someone gets hurt?!
improbablenotimpossible: (A smoke break)

[personal profile] improbablenotimpossible 2020-06-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, that hasn't happened, but that is why they're putting spells so the fire won't burn. To be honest, I blame the mages for the nonsense continuing into this century.

[personal profile] finalring 2020-06-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I... I see.

[ he sighs deeply. ]

Maybe I should be trying to study on how to treat burns, then. Just in case the spells don't work.

[ tfw you don't have magic ]
improbablenotimpossible: (The fact of the matter...)

[personal profile] improbablenotimpossible 2020-06-15 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
That might be a good idea, Gehring would have most of it handled, but having extra hands never hurts.

[He ends up getting a bit of paint smeared on his chin]
finalring: (pic#13816389)

[personal profile] finalring 2020-06-15 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ it's difficult to keep himself from laughing when he sees the paint on holmes' chin, but he's not going to say anything yet. ]

Gehring really is an excellent caretaker. I owe him a lot this past month, though I think he might be worrying a little too much about me...

[ he doesn't think he's worth all that worry, to be honest. ]

What are you painting?
improbablenotimpossible: (What the devil)

[personal profile] improbablenotimpossible 2020-06-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
He worries about everyone in, a sort of grousing way.

[He pauses, seeing the change in the man's expression, brows knitting in confusion before he looks at himself, noticing paint on his fingers - and touches his chin again to check, only to smear the paint more, opening his mouth in a quiet little 'oh' of realization]

Oh, I'm painting some of the banners... I am not an artist by nature, painting in the lines is the best I can do.
finalring: (pic#13932773)

[personal profile] finalring 2020-06-18 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever read about a detective that had a painting hobby. Is it true that you liked beekeeping?

[ he's been reading a lot. it's the most that he can do nowadays, when he has so much time on his hands and a great deal of anxiety to push away. ]

Do you need help
improbablenotimpossible: (My name is Sherlock Holmes)

[personal profile] improbablenotimpossible 2020-06-19 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Painting is more for the sedentary types, not something you see much in the profession... and yes, I do like it, I don't generally have the luxury of pursuing the hobby, though that may change now.

[He smiles a little]

Though I'm afraid most of my 'retirement years' were fabrications by do- Watson so people wouldn't ask awkward questions - and, I would really appreciate the help.
