Test-Drive Meme - January Pre-Game

TESTDRIVE MEME
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Main Navigation

Gently falling snow and a biting chill welcome students and faculty alike as they return to campus for the beginning of the Winter term. The constant buzz of helicopters delivering students back from their holiday fills the air, and charter busses can be seen coming in and out for hours. Slowly but surely, Daybreak Academy is coming alive once again with the sound of conversation and laughter.

It’ll be a few days before classes resume, but there are a number of fun events on campus to help students re-adjust to campus life, or learn the ins and outs if they are recent arrivals. Faculty, of course, will need to get to work immediately. Lesson plans and mission assignments wait for no-one, after all.

[All threads in this meme may be treated as canon should all involved characters be accepted into the game. Normally, the Faculty meeting will be held at the end of every month ICly, as this is the start of the game we’re incorporating it into the Test Drive. Faculty who accept missions will retain those mission assignments for the month, should they be accepted into the game. If not, we will distribute the remaining missions as needed to the Faculty who are accepted in.]

A. FACULTY IN-SERVICE
As is customary, the school faculty meet before the start of the next month to review the mission portfolios and determine who will be leading what, as well as discuss plans and concerns they might have regarding students. As it’s not uncommon for some students to attempt to listen in and get more details on the upcoming missions, the meeting place changes every month and some faculty serve as wardens to make sure students are kept away.

This month, the meeting is in Robespierre 401. The table is laid out with a number of pastries, snacks, and coffee for the assembled teachers and the projector is revved up and ready to go, with readily available laser pointers for any faculty giving presentations. The day’s Agenda will be discussing incoming students, discussing the start of the term and any expected issues, discussing the mission dossier and assigning faculty, and a few presentations from faculty on ongoing projects and educational advances they feel are worth sharing.

[The following missions are on the docket, they will all require a Faculty volunteer to lead a group of 4-6 students. Running these logs will fulfill the Faculty member’s log requirement for the month of January. Full details will be provided to the Faculty member via Private Message after their application has been processed]

I Wonder What This Button Does
January 14th

At the start of the year, the vaults of the academy is opened and volunteers are allowed inside to help organize the growing collection of artifacts and treasures that is kept securely inside. Due to how old the collection is, many labels have faded and many items have undergone changes, so it has become imperative to keep an accurate record. For students, cataloguing the collection is considered extra credit, though any attempts to smuggle any artifacts out will be met with severe disciplinary action.

28 Bleach Vats Later
January 18th

Cassandra indicates a horde of zombies will materialize from the outland in North Dakota within the United States. As is customary, the horde has been auctioned on the Runic Markets. The winner this time is the American Defense Contractor Coldsteel. As part of the auction package, Daybreak Academy will provide Coldsteel with support and recovery.

This mission requires 2 Faculty members, each leading a group of 4-6 students for two portions of the mission.

Ocean’s Six
January 21st

Cassandra has provided a readout of all roulette results within the Casino strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, within the United States. As is customary, a group of students and an instructor is to be dispatched to garner as much winnings as possible without arousing suspicion. Participants who successfully earn money without their sources being discovered will be entitled to a commission based on their earnings. Students will be provided with $10,000 in seed money and false identifications if necessary.

With the power of foresight, enter Casinos with the winning numbers, make as much money as you can, and try not to get thrown out

Hunt - Several Bones to Pick
January 23rd

Cassandra has noted thick mists inside the Parisian catacombs have given birth to an undead monstrosity. Dubbed the Bone Horror, this monster is collecting parts from corpses to grow in size and strength. Prognostication indicates it will emerge from the Catacombs within a month’s time. It is to be destroyed.

Hunt - Dullahan Texas Ranger
January 28th

Cassandra has been tracking a Dullahan’s emergence in the US state of Texas for some time, and we predict he will begin to move soon. Prognostication indicates that the Dullahan has been absorbing the culture of the local area and styles itself to be something of a cowboy, with aims to slay any local humans that tread upon the area it deems its ranch. It is to be destroyed.

B. WINTER BANQUET
It is customary for Daybreak Academy to hold a grand banquet at the start of every term, and today is no exception. Part celebration, part ice-breaker, the Grand Banquet is a chance for students and faculty to mingle, meet new people, and share a delicious meal.

Today, the tables are arrayed with thick roasts, massive turkeys, and whole pigs as the main course, as well as giant tofu and mushroom platters for the vegetarian and vegan students. Massive dishes heaped with breads and pastries line the tables, as well as broad bowls filled with any number of salad and side ingredients. The table centerpieces elevated ice sculptures of (allegedly) mythological creatures such as pegasi, griffins and dragons standing atop a giant pillar of ice that is surrounded with cold desserts on tiered platters.

While there is an abundance of food, with as many ravenous students as there are it is depleting quickly. Fortunately, an array of servants, both living and golem, are on hand to replace empty platters and assist as needed.

C. DORM ROOM ICEBREAKERS
With the chill of winter setting in, what better way to warm hearts and spirits than dorm icebreakers? Whether you agree with this or not, chances are - especially if you’re new - your RA has dragged you to the common area to participate in a number of (arguably) fun Icebreaker activities that were likely found by checking the first Google result.

Fortunately for those with lower tolerances to people and/or cheesiness, with the whole dorm turned out for these activities, escape may be possible! Unfortunately, many among the student body have heightened senses and supernatural combat abilities. Either way, it’s gonna be a rough evening.

D. IRIS NETWORK
It’s that time again. With the start of Winter Term, returning students and faculty need to update their Iris Network profiles with their current dorm residence and any new credits, class statuses, or accolades they may have earned. New students and faculties will have their profiles pushed to the top in an effort to help them integrate into the broader network, and it’s customary to post responses to people’s updated profiles “Liking” their content and making plans to meet up.

The code below will allow you to update your Iris Network Profile for the new term. Better get it up and see who all responds.

[The below code will ultimately be used for the profile for your character upon acceptance to Daybreak Academy. Please replace or fill in all text in the areas that are capitalized and do not delete any code lines]

He supposes he can't blame the kid. It's not as if he hasn't run into that kind of undead himself. He's really not the standard case. He's just got to be weary of being treated like the rest.

"Aw, kid, I'm really nothing special," He tells Peter. But at least, for this, he's ready with a lie, one he's practiced so that it might actually be believable.

He lifts up his hand, letting Peter see it. He breathes deep, eyes closing to focus, and then lets his power go. The glow takes over his body, highlighting intricate markings that seem settled under his skin, illuminating his fingertips. And just like that, before the flesh can even begin to turn to bone, he shuts it back down and tugs his knee closer to him.

"The people I knew there were about as lost as I was. Maybe living is a stretch, it wasn't much of a life. But for all my bad luck, I'm lucky enough to be here now and that's really all I can say. Not everyone I knew then could say the same." He shrugs. It happened.

Oh. The instant those markings come out, his spider senses start yelling at him. His sense of color is strange anyway, courtesy of magic-induced tritanopia, but when he's staring at something magical? It's a million times worse. He actually winces just a little as the markings seem to dance in front of his eyes. (He really needs to find himself a set of goggles soon or he's going to have a lot of trouble at this school.)

"What - what am I looking at?" Obviously something's up, but he can't tell what his senses are telling him. Gingerly, he reaches to touch Héctor's hand? As if doing that will help. "Is that a rune thing or something?"
unpocoloco: (Happy Sigh)

woops, the marks should've been just on his face SORRY

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
A little nervously, he lets the kid take his hand. For all the light before, it's really just a normal hand now.

He shrugs his shoulders. "No idea!" And that at least is the truth. "Just sort of happened once I stumbled into the outlands. Woke up, there it was." He draws his hand back.

"I probably just drank some bad water there or something, you know how it is, half that place is cursed some way or another. But that's what I'm here to learn, among other things. Who knows! Maybe one day I'll be able to do something as interesting as..." He tilts a little. "The way you dented that chair with your fingers."
made_up_names: (embarrassing wizards)

OOPS well that works anyway. he could poke at a spot that isn't lighting up.

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's still weird. And he thinks that something is up? But he's also willing to accept that Héctor might not know himself what is up here. He barely knows what's going on half the time himself. So he settles himself back in his chair with a sigh. Congratulations, Héctor. You've successfully lied to a teenager.

"I mean, I guess that can happen," he admits. "There's a lot of weird stuff out there." A pause as he follows Héctor's gaze and sees ... aww, hell. He messed up another chair didn't he. "Uh, this isn't Outland stuff though. This is spider Blight too. All of my powers are."
unpocoloco: (18)

light is everywhere, marks are face only, so that should work /finger guns

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Successfully lying to teenagers. He should put that on his list of accomplishments. The mother he never had would be so proud.

He nods along. Yes, lots of weird stuff. And the further he is from all that, the better this lie sails.

"Ay, yes, of course," He says. He shifts forward, peering a little closer at the dented chair. He looks around and behind him, to see no one's paying attention, then whispers conspiratorially, "Dent the whole edge. You make it even, nobody will know it isn't meant to be that way."

thumbs up

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. That - might actually work? And while he knows he's in a school where this sort of thing is relatively normal, he's pretty used to trying to hide this from his aunt and the rest of normal society. He grabs the rest of the edge just like Héctor suggests, carefully bending all of it to approximately the same angle. (The solid metal looks like putty in his hands; he bends it with no effort whatsoever. Maybe don't let him shake your hand too hard.)

"How does that look?" he says, squinting at his (ha) handiwork. It's ... not quite even, still, but it seems at least vaguely intentional now.
unpocoloco: (12)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe he's no good at the magic stuff, but he thinks he might be getting better at faking normal. And, considering the secrecy in all this stuff, maybe that's not such a bad thing.

It's undeniably impressive, watching the metal just bend. Definitely cooler than sticky power, though he'll just keep that to himself. Honestly, he's not sure what the kid's worried about-- with that power, surely someone's bound to think he's cool.

He leans back in the chair, squinting and tilting his head himself. "A little uneven but I think you should leave it. School chair should have a little wear and tear. More realistic." Maybe he can find something the kid can practice that with. Could help for blending into society in the future.

"Oh! Didn't even introduce myself. I'm Héctor, by the way. If you're taking any of the evening classes, I usually help out in a few of those."
made_up_names: (i am so awesome)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
He wiggles it a bit, but - honestly, he thinks Héctor's right here. It looks fine, and if it's a little dinged up, who cares? More school-ish or something. This guy at least seems to know what he's doing, even if he is kind of slippery about answering questions. Someone who gets why Peter, at least, wants to pretend to be a normal person.

"Nice to meet you," he says, brightening in turn. "I'm Peter. Peter Parker." A pause. "And I honestly dunno what classes I'm taking yet." Probably all of them? Too many of them.
unpocoloco: (18)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Ha! Well, don't worry about that, Peter, there's so much here I'd be surprised if anyone new's figured out what they want yet." Classes from history to how to wrangle daemons. It sure is far from any school he's ever known about.

"But if you need help deciding, I'd ask one of the other kids who've been around for a while. Could be a good conversation starter." He grins. Brought it right back around.
made_up_names: (classroom antics)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. They did start this because Peter was stress-sticking to an icebreaker index card. He looks nervous again, still fiddling with the dent in that chair. "Yeah? You don't think they'd look at me funny?" Surely fancy rich kids have all this stuff planned out in advance, right?
unpocoloco: (That Was A Lie)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Look at you funny? Are you kidding? You're going to get a few different answers." He starts to list on his fingers. "Someone who's just waiting to gush about the class or someone who's waiting to complain about it. You take whatever they say with a grain of salt, pick out of the facts, make a friend from there."

He looks up and waves a hand. "Maybe there's one or two who act likes snobs as if you should have your whole life figured out but nobody likes those guys and who cares if some jerk doesn't like you? There's going to be far more that will. I promise. You're a nice kid!"
made_up_names: (embarrassing wizards)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Look, man. Peter's always been at the outskirts of school even at his best. At least at his high school he was a nerd among nerds? But man, middle school left some scars. He ducks his head a bit, rubbing at the back of his neck.

"I dunno, it'd just be nice to like - have friends this time around?" He loves Ned dearly for sure but. "I don't wanna mess that up, especially if this is where I'm gonna go to school for the rest of my life."

He's pretty sure he can't go back to Midtown Tech after this.
unpocoloco: (Final Death)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Peter," He starts, and sighs. He shifts forward and looks serious. "Let me tell you something. Something it took me way too long to learn." Too long and too late by the time he realized. But it's not too late for this kid.

"Grabbing the attention of just everyone, it might seem like a good idea, and for a little bit it does feel really good. But what you want, more than any of that, is something of value." His hands go together and he gestures out to Peter as he speaks.

"What you like, what you do, the people you keep. It's more important to have a few that really mean something to you, than it is to try and hang on to a bunch of things you don't really care about and that don't care about you. If you do, you might end up losing those important things, the ones that really matter." He reaches out and pats a hand to Peter's shoulder. "Just take it easy on yourself, alright? You've got this."

made_up_names: (meaning what?)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
He looks down at Héctor's hand on his shoulder, a little skeptical. Teenagers, man. He still thinks it would be pretty cool to have a lot of eyes on him? His youtube page was full of dumb Spider-Man shit before the Avengers made him hush it all up. Popularity, amirite? The dream of every nerd who thinks it looks cool from the outside.

But he's not dumb either. He looks back up at Héctor with sympathy in his eyes. "You sound like you know way too much about that," he says, uncertain. "What happened?"
unpocoloco: (Siete)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
He sees that doubt and he's not exactly surprised. What kid wants to listen to something like that? Who at all wants to hear something like that? But it's truth and it at least needs saying.

But with that look of sympathy he smiles tight and shakes his head as though to say, 'Sorry, nice try'. "I just made a lot of mistakes, Peter. Lot of bad choices that I've had to spend even more time trying to fix. And others, I've seen who did similar for whatever reason and had to die with those mistakes. It's not something I'd want to see again."

He leans back then, away from Peter. "Maybe one day I'll be able try again or at least set things right. But, if not, at least I can try and help people avoid the same. You know what they say; even a bad example has a use." He grins a little for that.
made_up_names: (embarrassing wizards)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Similar, says Héctor. It's a shame Peter doesn't know enough about the undead to doubt that specific part of it. As it is he still makes a bit of a face, doubting the subject in general. Yeah, okay, he's had the great responsibility speech a couple times in his life, so he gets not just doing it for the vine. But.

"You say you're a bad example, but I can't even tell what you did," he says. He's a curious teenager, okay. You can't tell him these things without deets. "Were you famous? Old and famous?"

(That's rude, Peter.)
unpocoloco: (Well It's True)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-11 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He snorts and sputters, then allows the laugh to simply be, knee dropping as he goes to brace upon them.

"Alright, alright, that's fair, I'll give you a little more detail." He holds up his fingers, an inch worth of a gap between them.

"I wasn't famous," He declares, just to get that out of the way. "Not yet. I was doing well, but I wasn't quite there. My music was popular, got a lot of money whenever I played, lot of fans, so it was only a matter of getting the name out there, but I..." He shrugs, and looks down, wistful. "I had other things. I had home. I never really had that growing up, you know? Besides my home town. And so, for all I'm a musician, I kind of wanted other things too." Better things. Wonderful things. And then his eyes close and his mouth presses to a line. "But then one day, I made a choice. I thought... I don't know, I could please other people and still hang on to it all, maybe. I traveled to Europe on tour, left my home... and I got lost." In just about every way. He falls silent, only to shake himself of that.

"But for the record, I am not that old, niño."
made_up_names: (jeopardy)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-11 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Peter probably wouldn’t have recognized Héctor even if he’d described himself as a famous musician, so better that he didn’t. But he does perk up at the mention of music? Also at the while touring Europe thing, wow. He’d never even been on a plane before joining the Avengers. Flying is for people who have vacations fancy enough not to take the train for.

“If you’re old enough to call me niño, you’re old,” he points out with teenaged practicality. But. That’s not super important here. “What kind of music was it? Can you still play?”

If this guy isn’t that old, then surely he’s still got it.
unpocoloco: (Soft Laugh)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-12 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
He wouldn't have been too put out. He is at least old enough that Peter would've been far too young to hear of him if he had got anywhere. He's coming to prefer less attention for that matter.

"If you're young enough to call me old, that's what makes you a niño," He counters. But yes. Not as important. He guesses.

"Of course I can still play. Play my guitar every night," He says that with a tempered bit of pride. "I dabbled a bit, I'm not sure what all the genres are doing these days enough to tell. I am a little out of the loop, but I guess I'd say my inspirations come a lot from my home, in México. The Mariachi, the folk, a little bit of the modern stuff-- everybody with taste loves a good rock ballad, and the classical of course. Maybe I'll play sometime. I don't really preform anymore but I could manage sharing a little. If you're interested in hearing from a supposed anciano. What about you? Any particular music taste? Or are you one of those liars who says they like everything and really means the top three songs on the radio?"
made_up_names: (mentor!)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-12 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Guitar, huh. All right, he'll give Héctor like two cool points for that. Treasure them.

"That'd be pretty awesome, actually," he says, with genuine interest. "I kinda gave it up? 'cause I got busy and stuff. But I used to play flute."

He's nothing remotely special. A band nerd who used to do band nerd things before he became Spider-Man. As for music tastes, uhhh. That's a good question. "Do dumb mash-ups and video game soundtracks count?" he asks. Because. He's fairly certain they don't, and even asking says a whole lot about his taste in anything.
unpocoloco: (What No I Didn't Say That)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-12 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
That genuine interest is mirrored right back. He might not be a flute player but music is music and, well, it'd be nice to hear someone else play.

Though that? That has him wincing a little. He'll at least refrain from judging that too much out loud. "I'm... sure there's good soundtracks... out there." Probably... He shakes head, bringing that smile back.

"Tell you what. If you get your hands on a flute and something you can play that with, I'll play along with you on my guitar. Whatever it is. And if you need the time, I'll help you out with whatever is to give you that time. Even if it's homework. Sound good?"
made_up_names: (realization)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-12 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, Héctor. You can have a music friend, but at what cost.

Despite his terrible tastes, though, he is genuinely pleased at the thought of trying to play again. Could be fun? And this dude seems like he'd be fun to play with. "All right, deal," he says. "I'm sure I can find something."

Homework help though, pffft. More like he'll help you with yours, Héctor.
unpocoloco: (Casual)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-12 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
In his experience, that's usually the case anyway. Like that Gustavo jerk. This isn't the worst price he could pay.

He brightens. It's always a little sad to see people with a love of music having to set it aside. But on the flip side, being able to bring it back is always joy, especially when they first get going. Regardless of what he might have to play, he's looking forward to it.

"¡Epa! We'll make it happen then!" He says, beaming. Even if, indeed, Peter's more likely to help Héctor than the other way around. He can at least try. "I'm around, like I said. Pretty much all evening and early in the morning, if you're the early rising sort. We might even be on the same floor, if I'm not mistaken."
made_up_names: (sit ups)

[personal profile] made_up_names 2019-01-12 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah? Which dorm are you in?" he asks, leaning against that chair he bent. "I'n Aube. Room 305."

They are indeed on the same floor, funnily enough. Peter's assuming you're the RA though, old guy.
unpocoloco: (Oh!)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-01-12 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ha! What do you know? I'm in 302. Practically neighbors! I wonder how they assign these things," He ponders allowed.

The RA assumption is reasonable, but of course, untrue. At least at this time, becoming an RA seemed a little irresponsible when he is, eventually, looking to cut and run from all this. Places to be and all.

"Well--" He strikes out a hand. "Mucho Gusto, Peter. I'd better be off. Only so much time, after all."
