TEST DRIVE MEME - APRIL

TESTDRIVE MEME
IC Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

Spring is right around the corner with the passing of the Equinox, and with the season comes the changing of quarters. Vacation is on everyone’s minds, but so are lovely flowers, unfortunately timed april showers, and the prospect of getting brand new digs. Watch out - mortals aren’t the only ones finding themselves more active this season.

A. Mushroom, Mushroom, Oooooh it’s a…. badger????
With the advent of spring comes new and interesting growth. Circles of mushrooms, more commonly known in folklore around the world as fairy rings, are beginning to sprout anywhere green on campus.

You’d be wise to heed the warnings of old stories, though; anyone who steps into a fairy ring will find themselves changed once they emerge from it, entirely at the mercy of the fae magic that created the ring. It might be nothing more than a simple change of hair colour or facial features, or it could be as alarming and startling as an entire change of species.

To restore yourself back to normal, you’ll have to find another fairy ring and step through it. Considering they’re all around campus, it’s probably not a hard task...but you’d better watch your step, or you might find yourself going through several involuntary shifts before you regain your form again!

B. Poisson, not Poison

April Fools! Or April’s Fish as it is known in France. For reasons even the locals don’t know, the prankster holiday has a long association with fish, and it’s not difference on campus. It’s a yearly tradition to play a game of ‘tag the fish’, where students and faculty alike race to see who can stick the most fish - Paper, though it hasn’t stopped people from using literal fish - onto victims by noon. Winners of this little contest are treated to a special dinner.

There is absolutely no fishy business about the dinner, the staff assures you.

C. Clean Room, Clean Room, Move Down!

With Winter Quarter coming to an end and Spring Quarter starting up, students are given the option to move dorms. As students make (or lose) friends, it is not uncommon for them to want to room together or very, very far apart and the Academy is happy to facilitate this. And so, in the weeks leading up to Spring break students are able to submit room change requests, which, once approved, will give them a few weeks to clear out of their old dorm entirely and move into their new one. This can be quite the process and while the school does make moving equipment available in the form of boxes, dollies, and golf carts, students are typically on their own. With so many moving dorms at the same time, it can be a haphazard time, especially with all the golf carts whizzing about.

D. How I will Spend My Spring Vacation (text)

Hey everyone, Spring break’s coming, aren’t you excited?! I know not everyone’s going to be going on the school sponsored trip, so let’s hear where you’re doing for vacation! And if you can’t go anywhere neat, let’s hear about your dream destination!

[ The answers are, naturally, public. ]

"Well, if you eat one and begin sweating and crying profusely... You'll know you picked the wrong one." He smiles cheerfully at his answer, like that is something humorous.

Héctor stares.

"Ah. I see..." He says, voice pitching somewhat high. There's some bad memories just on the edge of his consciousness, waiting to tip him over into nightmares. He shakes his head of that.

"Good thing I'm not feeling hungry." Was this guy some kind of fae or daemon or did he just come by that nonchalance via being an awful human? He's not sure he wants to ask.

The man takes that answer... about as expected. It doesn't seem to phase the Chinese man. If anything, he seems briefly amused before reaching down to grasp one of the mushrooms by the stem.

"Pardon me," he says to seemingly no one before plucking the single mushroom and holding it up between himself and Héctor.

"The caps here. Scotch Bonnets have a bump on the top of their cap--this here." With the gentlest of touches, he places one immaculately sharpened finger on top of the mushroom's bump. "The False Champignons do not. They have flat tops or even a depression where this bump would be."

He turns the mushroom over then, exposing the underside, gesturing with that same finger to the array of gills. "Also, the False Champignons have many more gills on the underneath of their caps, which will be spaced closer together and often attach partway down the stem rather than at the very top."

There's a distinctly horrifying moment in which D plucks up the mushroom (apologizing not to him, but to the Fairfolk even he can assume) and he has to wonder what exactly D is going to do with it.

But then, like that, he's getting a demonstration. Despite all trepidation, he listens close, trying to absorb what he's being told. It can't do anything to him now he's pretty sure, but it might help to let any wandering kids know.

And sometimes nature facts are just cool.

"You know a lot about mushrooms, huh? Is this a hobby?"

A hobby?

"Of sorts." He smiles at the other man mysteriously, alluding to some private source of amusement in that exchange but not offering any explanation--except to continue into an introduction.

"My name is Count D. I manage a petshop in town by the same name. While animals are my specialty, I also know quite a few things about other aspects of our natural world."

A cryptic answer. He really shouldn't be surprised. More surprising is the actual answer to follow.

"Oh, that's pretty cool," He admits. And if he's here on Daybreak campus and...being all he is, he probably gets a lot of different sorts as customers. "Not all shop owners are so dedicated to the subject they're actually working with."

Just a nine to five for most, he imagines.

"I think I've passed your shop by before. What brings you all the way out here?"

"My family and I take pride in our work. We're very passionate about it." Not all shop owners have a mission of revenge that underlies all of their business transactions. Someone has to remember all the things that humans so often forget about--including the world around them.

But as for his reason for being here... "The Academy has requested my expertise as a consultant for their many different creatures on campus. Or for procuring new ones, as the case may be. I'm happy to be of assistance to such a prestigious school."

"A family business? Oh... that's really nice," He says, looking and sounding like he genuinely believes that.

He suspects nothing.

"You deal in those kinds of creatures too then, huh? I'm not too familiar with all that but they tend to be rather colorful I think. Literally and in personality."

"The Outlands is a colorful place. Many of those creatures simply take after their surroundings. Animals on this world aren't that dissimilar, in that regard, once you've stepped outside the boundaries of the cities and farmland."

The true jungles of the world are ones of vibrant color and energy, enough so to rival some of the places he's seen in the Outlands.

"That is true." He laughs rueful. He explains, "I used to, ah, live in the Outlands, sort of. And México before that. It's really different here in Europe."

Though this school certainly makes up for things as Outland creatures go.
