Welcome to the March AU Planning Meme for Daybreak Academy! This post is intended to help prospective players plot their AU and figure out who their characters are in this setting and where they want to go, as well as work together with other players to plan future CR, build Secret Societies and Clubs, and generally determine where they want to start their characters, and where they want them to go. In addition to posting up the form, you are encouraged to tag around to other people's forms and discuss potential CR and plans with them. This post is an open forum for all prospective players to hash out interesting ideas for their characters ahead of joining the game.

I feel like Jail and Marian could have an interesting dynamic.

On one hand, Jail has a very extensive knowledge of non-magical engineering and mechanical sciences, and could genuinely be a fascinating person to talk about academic research with. On the other hand, she's a ridiculous hedonist out to have fun and do dumb shit, as compared to Marian's serious attitude.

Ooh, that'd be fun. Even in her original story, Marian actually had a collaboration with another prof in Engineering to help actually build her devices, since she's heavier on theory side. She'll haaaaaaaaaaate Jail's attitude for sure, but as long as she doesn't mind dirty looks and getting lectured/told off all the time... I do think she'd be deeply interested in magitech and runecrafting kind of things, and wanting to see some theoretical ideas put into practice, Marian at least could manage to put up with her!

Jail is the kind of person who enjoys attention, even if it's negative attention. She'd find the lectures hilarious and probably double down on teasing Marian every time. To her credit, she is genuinely very skilled in her work, so she'll be a good partner as long as they're focused on business.

Yesss, this is the good shit. Do you want to say they met before coming to Daybreak or build it up from scratch? Either would be good with me! Had an entertaining idea in passing but I don't know if it would work with your char or not: the idea that they had some correspondence on a technical level but actually meet in person for the first time at Daybreak (which would be a big oh no from Marian upon seeing these shenanigans, lmao).

Ooh, I'm torn... wait. Idea:

You know how academics can get really petty in formal papers? Like, snippy little comments in the footnotes or publishing something called "A Rebuttal To My Colleague's Response To My Discourse On... (part one of seven)"? The kind of thing that everyone knows is just professional speak for "fuck you".

What if Jail occasionally publishes some academic stuff under pseudonyms, on the rare occasions when 1. she's in a position to do so without getting caught and 2. it isn't information that would be more valuable to sell or keep for herself.

And she and Marian at one point got into essentially a giant academic slapfight via a whole chain of increasingly snarky papers, in which they both hated this one guy and were trying to tear apart his terrible theories, while also having some very minor disagreements with each other. So they were in theory agreeing but also kept sneaking in little jabs at each other, too, because they couldn't resist.

(Jail deliberately arranged the formatting of her bibliography to spell out 'fuck you' in one paper. She's not sorry.)

They don't know who the other one is at first, but then after they meet maybe one of them recognizes some of their theories and they're like "godDAMMIT THAT WAS YOU???"

God yes, it's perfect. Or, if the academic angle is a bit too hard to squeeze in, it could even be in regards to some inter-faction communication where people are debating the merits of some kind of magitech or something along those lines?Since Marian is all for that in theory as well...

Works for me. ...come to think of it, being inter-faction communication doesn't mean it isn't academic.

After all, even magical schools are still schools. :D

Yesss! I mean since Daybreak has clearly been around long enough to have graduates and grad students/TAs, there obviously have to be dissertations and papers and such. And I bet Marian started going all in on reading/catching up/commenting after her little don't say crazy episode, don't say crazy episode break from purely mundane research.
